European gas reserves hit lowest levels since 2016
European Union gas reserves are at their lowest levels for this time of year since 2016, with storage currently at approximately 71 percent. This is significantly below the five-year seasonal average of 87 percent. Specific nations face even tighter buffers, including Germany at under 57 percent, the Netherlands at 52.1 percent, and Latvia at 47.1 percent.
In the Netherlands, the government faces financial strain due to gas storage mandates. State-owned Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) holds a 21 billion euro credit facility from the Ministry of Finance to purchase natural gas, alongside a 993 million euro subsidy for additional costs. Minister of Climate and Green Growth Stientje van Veldhoven has indicated that while the Netherlands seeks to move away from current filling obligations, European partners have not been willing to cover the associated additional costs.
Global disruptions, including conflicts in the Middle East affecting LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and force majeure declarations from Qatar, have contributed to market volatility. Consequently, European benchmark gas prices on the Dutch TTF have risen above €72 per megawatt hour.
