European heat pump adoption drives electrical grid flexibility

The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) has highlighted the critical role of heat pumps in enhancing the flexibility of the European electrical system. As heating, transport, and industry undergo electrification, the electrical grid must become more intelligent to integrate increasing amounts of renewable energy. Heat pumps can support this by adjusting their operation to coincide with periods of high renewable availability and lower electricity prices.

To facilitate this, the European Commission’s Electrification Action Plan proposes measures such as reforming electricity bills and grid charges to incentivize flexible usage. Implementing smart controls and dynamic tariffs could allow heat pumps, batteries, and electric vehicles to modulate demand, reducing peak pressure on the grid and potentially lowering energy costs for households.

Market data shows significant growth in the sector. In Europe, the number of heat pump units is projected to rise from 6.4 million in 2012 to 29.3 million by 2025. Italy has seen substantial adoption with over 5 million units installed, particularly in the residential market. In 2025, Italy recorded 423,000 unit sales, ranking second in Europe behind France, which sold 528,000 units.
