European heatwave causes over 1,300 excess deaths, WHO urges heat safety measures

The World Health Organization reported that the recent European heatwave was linked to more than 1,300 excess deaths. It issued updated public guidance recommending people avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours, stay in shaded or air‑conditioned areas, and spend several hours each day in a cool environment. The WHO advises ventilating homes with cooler night air, keeping windows and blinds closed during the day, and limiting the use of electric fans when temperatures exceed 40 °C. Additional recommendations include setting air‑conditioning thermostats to 27 °C, wearing loose lightweight clothing, staying hydrated, and checking on vulnerable groups such as older adults and those with chronic illnesses.

In the United States, Pitt County officials reminded residents to practice fireworks safety and to take precautions during extreme heat. They urged the public to attend professional fireworks displays, keep children and pets away from fireworks, and use water or a hose to extinguish any malfunctions. For heat safety, officials recommended covering windows, avoiding electric fans above 95 °F, staying in shaded or air‑conditioned locations, and never leaving people or animals unattended in parked vehicles.
