European infrastructure faces funding gaps and hydrogen technology advancements
European water infrastructure faces a significant funding gap. While annual investments in drinking and wastewater networks total 52.5 billion euros, the European Commission estimates an annual shortfall of 23 billion euros. Sweco reports that this gap causes networks to age faster than they can be renewed, urging a shift toward risk-driven, data-led strategic investments to combat climate change and cyber threats.
In energy technology, German researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems have developed a diesel reformer. This system converts diesel into hydrogen-rich gas for use in fuel cells, potentially bypassing the need for bulky hydrogen storage tanks. The current prototype provides 25 kilowatts of electric power, suitable for smaller maritime systems or auxiliary equipment.
Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, the SWIM subsidy program is expanding the hydrogen network for road transport. The 2026 budget aims to establish four new hydrogen refueling stations and add approximately 200 hydrogen vehicles. This initiative supports the Dutch goal of having hydrogen stations at 26 urban hubs by 2030, following European Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulations.
