Montenegrin economy prepares for EU accession and regional integration
Montenegrin businesses and institutions are focusing on economic readiness for European Union membership. During a panel organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro and the Ministry of European Affairs, experts emphasized that accession will bring significant opportunities for growth and export to a market of nearly 450 million consumers. However, it also necessitates immediate adaptation to new trade regimes, customs procedures, and European standards.
Nina Drakić, President of the Chamber of Commerce, noted that competitiveness must be built well before membership begins, highlighting the specific challenges faced by micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises with limited resources. Professor Gordana Đurović added that the transition will require companies to find new partners and integrate into European value chains.
In a separate context, Robert de Groot, Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), highlighted that stronger ties with the EU and the region can reduce economic vulnerabilities and improve energy security. He pointed to the modernization of the Bar–Golubovci railway line—supported by a €63 million EIB loan and a €112.6 million EU grant—as a key project to connect the Port of Bar with the rest of Europe and strengthen supply chain resilience.
