European Parliament members targeted by deepfake pornography

A study by the German civil society organization Agora Digitale Transformation has revealed that approximately 50 to 60 members of the European Parliament have been targeted by deepfake pornographic content. The findings indicate that 46 of the victims are women, meaning nearly one in six female MEPs has been affected by the non-consensual use of generative AI to create sexually explicit imagery.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola condemned the attacks, describing the digital violence as “intolerable and deplorable” and an attempt to target elected representatives. The phenomenon is viewed by researchers as a new technological tool for the long-standing issue of violence against women.

In response, the European Union is set to implement a ban on AI “nudifier” apps starting December 2. Additionally, authorities are investigating the potential use of the Grok tool on the X social media platform for similar purposes. A cross-party group of 119 MEPs has formally requested EU leadership to ensure the effective enforcement of the upcoming ban and to expedite the investigation into Grok.
