Overview

The proliferation of generative AI and deepfake technology is driving a global shift in digital security and regulatory approaches. As attackers become capable of convincingly reproducing faces, voices, and mannerisms, traditional identity verification methods are being rendered unreliable.

Technological advancements, such as ‘Zero-Shot Voice Cloning’, allow criminals to create convincing vocal imitations using only seconds of audio sampled from social media. These scams have evolved into a highly organized global industry, causing billions of dollars in damages. Recent reports indicate that one in four people in the United States reported receiving a call with a deepfake voice in the last year. Common tactics include ‘virtual kidnapping’ scams, where cloned voices are used to trick family members into believing a loved one has been abducted.

Deepfakes are increasingly challenging the effectiveness of facial biometrics. While facial recognition remains a valid authentication layer, specialists suggest it can no longer serve as a standalone defense. Recommended mitigations include multi-layered controls such as liveness detection and the use of pre-agreed family safe words.

The threat has expanded into the medical sector through ‘Medfakes’ and is increasingly used for extortion and harassment. In response, new legislative frameworks are emerging to combat non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII). In the United States, the TAKE IT DOWN Act requires platforms to remove such content within 48 hours. Similarly, the United Kingdom’s Data Act and Online Safety Act criminalize the creation of such content with a mandatory 48-hour removal window, while the European Union’s AI Act is expected to introduce prohibitions on systems designed for this purpose.
