European leaders debate rising Russian sabotage and security threats

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has warned of a rapid increase in sabotage attacks and airspace violations across Europe. Speaking at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in New York, Kallas stated that Moscow is attempting to intimidate European nations into reducing their support for Ukraine.

To counter these threats, Kallas advocated for increased pressure on Russia, specifically targeting its military industry and the so-called ‘shadow fleet’. She also highlighted growing maritime instability in the Red Sea, the Black Sea, and the Strait of Hormuz, noting that Houthi attacks are already impacting European interests. Additionally, she pointed to the involvement of tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers supporting Russia and identified China as a key enabler through the supply of dual-use goods.

In contrast to some warnings of an imminent Russian military strike on NATO territory, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has urged calm. While some leaders have warned of a decisive moment for European freedom, Tsahkna stated that Estonia’s threat assessment has not changed and that there is no immediate reason to fear a Russian military attack on the country, suggesting that Russia intends to use fear as a tactic.
