European leaders discuss NATO military readiness against Russia
European leaders and officials are discussing military readiness and strategic capabilities in response to Russia. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated during a conference in Kyiv that NATO holds an “enormous advantage” in air power over Russia. He suggested that Europe could potentially defeat Russia and cripple its energy infrastructure, specifically its oil refining capacity, within six weeks using advanced systems like F-35 fighter jets and JASSM missiles, even without direct United States involvement.
In Germany, challenges regarding military recruitment and readiness have emerged. Internal data indicates that a significant portion of those who volunteered for military service are deemed physically unfit, with approximately 24 to 25 percent failing fitness requirements in the first half of the year. Additionally, many potential recruits expressed a lack of interest in service. To bolster the NATO eastern flank, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius intends to enlist up to 1,000 soldiers by autumn to support the brigade stationed in Lithuania.
Furthermore, Germany's Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) reported that numerous Bundeswehr members have come under the scrutiny of Russian and Belarusian intelligence services following trips to those countries to visit relatives.
