European officials urge EU action against Israel's E1 settlement plan

Approximately 500 former European leaders, diplomats, and high-ranking officials have issued an urgent call for the European Union to intervene against the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The group, which includes former prime ministers and foreign ministers from France, Italy, Belgium, and Sweden, expressed deep concern regarding the E1 settlement project.

The E1 plan involves the construction of over 1,200 housing units near Jerusalem. Signatories argue that this development would effectively split the West Bank in two and isolate East Jerusalem from surrounding Palestinian areas, thereby undermining the viability of a two-state solution.

Critics of the plan have condemned the EU for its perceived passivity in the face of potential territory annexation. The signatories are demanding immediate action, including the potential suspension of trade provisions within the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the imposition of sanctions on financial institutions that contribute to the E1 project.
