Israel expands West Bank settlements, upgrades status
Entities: West Bank · Israel · Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Committee · Araba · Qabatiya
Overview
In late July 2026 Israel continued its intensified settlement drive. After the Gush Etzion council approved expansion on roughly 6,000 dunams on 20 July and the upgrade of Givat Ze'ev to city status on 22 July, the Israeli army launched a large‑scale operation across the West Bank, entering dozens of villages including Tell in the Nablus governorate, detaining more than 30 residents and leaving four Palestinians and two Israelis dead.
A day later, reports repeated the Givat Ze'ev upgrade, with Palestinian officials calling the move a war crime and highlighting a 130‑million‑shekel funding package to accelerate colonisation. The subsequent raids underscored the escalating security tension.
On 28 July the Israeli military issued four orders seizing over 22 dunams of land in the villages of Araba and Qabatiya south of Jenin, citing military use. This seizure forms part of a broader pattern in the first half of 2026, during which thousands of dunams of Palestinian property were appropriated through hand‑over, expropriation and security‑measure orders, expanding settlement footprints, establishing new security zones and roads.
