European luxury giants lose €251 billion in market value

The six largest listed European luxury companies—LVMH, Hermès, Kering, Richemont, Prada, and Moncler—have lost a combined €251 billion in market capitalization since the start of 2026. This significant contraction is largely attributed to weakening demand in China, a primary driver of luxury growth for the past two decades, alongside economic headwinds in the United States.

Financial reports from LVMH, Hermès, and Kering indicate varying degrees of impact. LVMH saw its market value decrease by €131.6 billion, with fashion and leather goods sales to Chinese customers falling by approximately 15%. Kering experienced a sharper decline in sales to Chinese consumers, dropping between 15% and 20%. Hermès, while maintaining growth in high-end leather goods like Birkin bags (up 10.8%), saw its overall revenue growth slow to 4.3%, with stagnant sales in the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan.

In the United States, luxury spending has also shown signs of cooling. Citi credit card data indicates that luxury expenditures fell by at least 4% in July, August, and September. Analysts suggest that as consumer confidence wavers due to macroeconomic factors, luxury groups will likely focus on cost efficiency and margin protection.
