LVMH and L’Oréal market valuation shift

Overview

The luxury conglomerate LVMH has experienced a significant downturn, losing its status as France’s most valuable company and falling out of the top ten largest publicly traded companies in Europe for the first time since 2017. The company’s market capitalization has dropped to approximately 201 billion euros, following a stock price decline of roughly 35% to 37% from its 2023 peak.

This decline is driven by weakening demand in China, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and a broader shift in consumer preferences toward unique experiences. Financial reports for the first half of the year indicate a 3% decrease in revenue, totaling 38.644 billion euros, alongside a 4% drop in recurring operating profit. These challenges have also impacted the personal wealth of founder and CEO Bernard Arnault, who has fallen out of the top 10 richest individuals globally.

Consequently, L’Oréal has overtaken LVMH to become the most valuable company on the Paris Stock Exchange. As of mid-September 2026, L’Oréal’s market value reached approximately 203 billion euros, surpassing LVMH’s valuation of roughly 201 billion euros. This marks the first time since 2017 that a non-luxury goods company has held the top position on the French market.

Experts attribute the divergence to the ‘lipstick effect,’ where consumers favor more affordable premium cosmetics over high-end luxury goods during economic uncertainty. Additionally, market uncertainty has been fueled by discussions regarding leadership succession within the Arnault family.
