European maritime leaders sign nine technology roadmaps for 2050 decarbonization
Nineteen leaders from the European waterborne sector, including representatives from Damen Shipyards Group and Erma Tech Group, have signed nine Technology Roadmaps aimed at driving maritime decarbonization through 2050. The roadmaps were presented to Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, during the Waterborne Leadership Event in Brussels.
The roadmaps establish a shared framework for research, development, innovation, and the market deployment of technologies. They set specific decarbonization and technological targets for the years 2035, 2040, and 2050. The initiative covers nine critical areas: maritime technology, port ecosystems, inland waterway transport, passenger ships and ferries, cruise ships, deep-sea shipping, offshore vessels, and the blue economy.
By focusing on the transition to cleaner energy sources, digitalization, and the development of smart ships and ports, the roadmaps aim to strengthen Europe’s technological leadership, competitiveness, and strategic autonomy. The framework involves a broad range of stakeholders, including shipbuilders, shipowners, ports, maritime suppliers, and research institutes, to align with the EU Industrial Maritime Strategy and EU Ports Strategy.
