European Music Festivals Cancel Shows Amid Heatwave

A severe heatwave across Europe has forced the cancellation or interruption of dozens of outdoor music festivals. In the Netherlands, the Defqon. 1 electronic music festival and the Nous’klaer festival in Rotterdam were halted by local authorities, while Belgium saw events such as Werchter Boutique and Paradise City end early. France experienced multiple disruptions, including the evacuation of 15,000 attendees at Retro C Trop after a tornado and the early shutdown of Garorock and Solidays due to extreme temperatures and storms. Organisers report logistical problems, heightened safety risks, and added costs for shade structures, night‑time staffing and free‑water provision. French Culture Minister Catherine Pégard described the situation as "a sword of Damocles" and announced work on new protocols to help festivals cope with climate‑related weather extremes. The sector, already strained by reduced public funding, now faces the challenge of adapting schedules, relocating stages and providing additional resources while maintaining profitability.
