European nations pursue HIMARS missile systems to enhance defense

European nations are expanding their long-range strike capabilities through the procurement of the American HIMARS missile system.

Sweden has announced a decision to acquire the HIMARS system in a contract valued at approximately $729 million. The procurement, intended to complement existing Archer self-propelled howitzers, is part of a broader defense development plan through 2030. Sweden is also pursuing industrial cooperation with Lockheed Martin and Saab, including potential integration of the GLSDB system. Additionally, Sweden and Finland have signed a joint declaration to cooperate on rocket artillery training, development, and supply security.

Croatia is also in discussions with the United States regarding the acquisition of missiles for the HIMARS system with ranges exceeding 150 kilometers. Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anušić stated that the country seeks to enhance its defensive capabilities to meet NATO obligations. Croatia expects to receive its HIMARS systems in 2028 and is also looking to acquire Black Hawk helicopters and Bradley fighting vehicles to reach full operational readiness by 2030.
