European HIMARS procurement and defense expansion

Overview

European nations are expanding their long-range strike capabilities through the procurement of the American HIMARS missile system.

Sweden has authorized a $729 million purchase of the M142 HIMARS from Lockheed Martin, including more than ten launchers and guided ammunition. This acquisition is intended to complement Sweden’s existing Archer artillery. To ensure supply security, Saab and Lockheed Martin will collaborate on ammunition production within Sweden. Furthermore, Sweden and Finland have signed a joint declaration to enhance cooperation regarding training, maintenance, and industrial production of guided rocket ammunition to strengthen Nordic interoperability and NATO defense on Europe’s northern flank.

In addition to Sweden, Croatia is in discussions with the United States to acquire missiles for the HIMARS system with ranges exceeding 150 kilometers. Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anušić stated the country seeks to enhance defensive capabilities to meet NATO obligations. Croatia expects to receive its HIMARS systems in 2028 as part of a broader effort to reach operational readiness by 2030.
