European Parliament approves €489 million in storm recovery aid

The European Parliament has approved €489 million in aid from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to assist Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Malta in recovering from severe storms and flooding experienced earlier in 2026.

The funding was approved with 651 votes in favor, 17 against, and three abstentions. Portugal will receive the largest portion, totaling €261.5 million, following damage from storms Kristin, Leonardo, and Marta. Spain is allocated €149.1 million, Italy will receive €74.9 million, and Malta is set to receive €3.7 million following the impact of Storm Harry.

The EUSF resources are designated for emergency and recovery operations, including the restoration of energy, water, telecommunications, and transport infrastructure. The aid also supports health and education services, clean-up operations, temporary accommodation, rescue services, and the protection of cultural heritage.
