EU storm recovery aid for Southern Europe

Overview

The European Parliament has approved a €489 million aid package from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to assist Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Malta in recovering from severe storms and flooding experienced earlier in 2026.

Portugal is set to receive the largest share, totaling €261.5 million, following damage from storms Kristin, Leonardo, and Marta. The storms in Portugal resulted in 19 deaths and losses estimated to exceed five billion euros. Spain has been allocated €149.1 million, Italy €74.9 million, and Malta €3.7 million following the impact of Storm Harry.

The funds are designated for emergency and recovery operations, including the restoration of energy, water, telecommunications, and transport infrastructure. Additionally, the aid will support health and education services, clean-up operations, temporary accommodation, rescue services, and the protection of cultural heritage.
