European Parliament calls for EU-China de-risking and condemns human rights abuses

The European Parliament has adopted a comprehensive report addressing the increasingly difficult state of EU-China relations. The document emphasizes the need for multilateralism and dialogue on global security, climate, and human rights, while simultaneously calling for urgent measures to reduce the bloc's economic dependence on China.

Lawmakers highlighted concerns regarding China's unfair economic practices, industrial overcapacity, and state subsidies. The report advocates for de-risking in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, pharmaceuticals, and critical raw materials. It also suggests strengthening the ‘Global Gateway’ strategy in Africa and Latin America as an alternative to the Belt and Road Initiative.

On human rights, the Parliament issued a sharp rebuke of Beijing’s policies in Tibet, condemning the forced assimilation of Tibetan children through state-run residential schools and the erosion of linguistic and religious identity. The report also criticized Chinese interference in Buddhist religious affairs, specifically regarding the succession of the Dalai Lama, and demanded information on the whereabouts of the missing Panchen Lama.

Regarding geopolitical security, the Parliament noted China's position on the war in Ukraine, citing reports of the Chinese military training Russian soldiers. It urged China to use its influence to end the conflict and called for increased coordination between the EU, the US, and G7 partners to protect vital technology and infrastructure.
