European Parliament calls for fossil fuel phase-out timeline

The European Parliament has called on the European Union to establish a clear, specific timeline for the abandonment of fossil fuels, including oil, gas, and coal. This request comes ahead of the COP31 climate summit, scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey, from November 9 to 20.

The resolution urges the EU to lead international negotiations to accelerate the energy transition and demands the removal of public subsidies for fossil fuels. Beyond addressing global warming, the Parliament emphasized that transitioning away from fossil fuels is critical for European energy security, reducing vulnerability to geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions. The proposed strategy also seeks to ensure energy autonomy and provide financing for the most vulnerable nations.
