European Parliament calls for Houthi designation as terrorist group

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on the Council of the European Union to designate the Houthi movement, including its political and military wings, as a terrorist organization. The proposal, initiated by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, also seeks to freeze the group's financial assets and economic resources and dismantle its funding networks.

The resolution follows an escalation of Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel, as well as ongoing threats to international commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb strait. MEPs condemned these actions as flagrant violations of international law and humanitarian law, noting the worsening humanitarian crisis and civilian displacement in Yemen.

Furthermore, the Parliament denounced the destabilizing role of Iran, stating that the Houthis are financed, equipped, and trained by the Iranian regime. The resolution also condemned coordination between the Houthis, Hezbollah, and other Iran-backed groups, asserting that lasting stability in the Middle East requires the disarmament of non-state armed groups.
