The European People's Party (EPP) has issued a formal statement condemning the funeral of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić in Belgrade. The EPP described the scenes—which included state and military honors and the presence of high-ranking Serbian officials—as “deeply disturbing” and in direct opposition to the values of reconciliation and respect for victims.

The EPP announced that these events will be a critical factor in the ongoing internal review of the Serbian Progressive Party's (SNS) status as an associated member. This review, initiated by EPP President Manfred Weber in September 2025, follows concerns regarding Serbia's close ties to Russia and China, its refusal to align with EU foreign policy, and domestic political repression.

European Parliament member Helmut Brandstatter noted that the glorification of Mladić has worsened relations between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Additionally, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos reportedly cancelled a planned visit to Serbia, stating that such actions are incompatible with the values required for EU accession.
