EPP proceedings against Serbian Progressive Party

Overview

The European People's Party (EPP) has initiated internal proceedings against the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), the ruling party of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

Andrej Kovačev, head of the EPP's Bulgarian delegation, criticized Vučić for having ‘played both sides for too long’ and suggested that European leaders often rely on untruthful information from the Belgrade administration. EPP President Manfred Weber and other members have condemned the Belgrade regime for the glorification of war criminal Ratko Mladić, stating such actions are contrary to European values and call Serbia’s European future into question.

While some members of the German CDU continue to support the SNS, internal pressure within the EPP to distance itself from the party is increasing. Analysts have noted that the SNS could face a fate similar to Hungary's Fidesz, which had its membership suspended by the EPP in 2019. Some experts speculate the SNS may choose to withdraw from the EPP voluntarily to avoid formal expulsion.
