Europol dismantles illegal horse meat trafficking ring in Europe
Europol has coordinated a major international operation across Ireland, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium to dismantle an illegal horse meat trafficking ring. The investigation, led by Belgian authorities, targeted a network accused of using forged documents and manipulated microchips to disguise the identity and medical history of retired racehorses.
By falsifying certificates, suspects allegedly reclassified horses that were unfit for human consumption due to previous medication treatments as suitable for slaughter. This fraud allowed horses with little commercial value to be sold for between 1,000 and 1,500 euros. Investigators believe the meat from these animals may have entered the food chain, potentially being processed into snacks like meatballs and croquettes and sold through wholesalers.
During the coordinated raids, approximately 200 investigators inspected more than 1,000 horses, many of which were seized. In Belgium, authorities arrested three suspects and seized over 100,000 euros in cash. The Dutch animal welfare organization House of Animals noted that many of the affected animals were retired racehorses from the United Kingdom and Ireland that were transported under poor conditions to various European slaughterhouses.
