Europe faces widespread protests over living costs and public services

A wave of social unrest is spreading across Europe, driven by rising living costs, housing shortages, and dissatisfaction with public services. While specific triggers vary by nation, the movements share common themes of economic instability and a perceived decline in the welfare state.

In France, protests began with students demanding better educational infrastructure and fairer university admissions, eventually involving hundreds of thousands of participants. Germany has seen demonstrations against the potential reintroduction of compulsory military service, with significant activity in cities like Hamburg and Frankfurt. In Spain and Portugal, the focus has shifted to housing unaffordability and rising rents.

Other notable unrest includes student and labor protests in Italy, demonstrations in Greece regarding education funding, and significant protests in Albania against corruption. In Serbia, a student-led movement recently contributed to the resignation of President Aleksandar Vucic and his subsequent electoral defeat.

While many demonstrations began peacefully, some have escalated into violence. Reports from Germany and France indicate instances of looting, property damage, and clashes with police. In response to the instability, the US government issued a security advisory for citizens in Portugal.
