European Public Prosecutor's Office to investigate EU funds in Hungary

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is launching an investigation into the use of European Union funds in Hungary. A dedicated team, including at least 10 delegated European prosecutors and a specialized investigative unit, will be established to conduct the probe.

Laura Codruța Kövesi, the first Chief Prosecutor of the EPPO and former head of Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), will lead the efforts. The investigation follows discussions in Budapest regarding the oversight of EU financial resources. The move comes amid significant political tension between the Hungarian government and EU leadership regarding the rule of law and the management of Union funds.
