EPPO oversight of EU funds in Hungary

Overview

Hungary and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) have moved toward establishing oversight of European Union funds within Hungary. Initial discussions between EPPO Chief Laura Codruța Kövesi and Hungarian officials focused on the technical and legislative requirements for Hungary to join the EPPO. This accession process involves a two-phase legislative overhaul to establish prosecutor selection processes and address criminal procedure and data protection rules.

Following these coordination efforts, the EPPO is launching an investigation into the use of EU funds in Hungary. The probe will be conducted by a dedicated team, including at least 10 delegated European prosecutors and a specialized investigative unit led by Kövesi. This development occurs amid political tension between the Hungarian government and EU leadership concerning the rule of law and the management of Union resources.
