European heat pump sales rise 11% amid energy price volatility

Residential heat pump sales in 12 European countries rose by 11% during the first half of 2026, reaching approximately 1.16 million units compared to 1.05 million in the same period in 2025, according to the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA).

This growth is attributed to rising oil and gas prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the subsequent spike in crude oil prices, which reached $126 per barrel in late April. Additionally, the European Commission’s Electrification Action Plan has encouraged member states to lower electricity taxes to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

The EHPA notes that the popularity of heat pump technology is heavily dependent on electricity pricing. In countries like Germany, subsidy schemes have already established heat pumps as a leading heating technology. The European Commission aims to ensure that electricity taxes do not exceed those applied to gas to further drive electrification.
