European Society of Cardiology issues new heart and kidney disease guidelines

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC), in collaboration with the European Renal Association (ERA), has released new clinical guidelines focused on the integrated management of cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Published in the ‘European Heart Journal’, these guidelines emphasize the interdependence of heart and kidney health, noting that CKD can accelerate cardiovascular issues and vice versa.

With an estimated 100 million people living with CKD in Europe, the new recommendations advocate for earlier detection through systematic screening. Specifically, clinicians are encouraged to use estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) to identify at-risk patients. The goal is to improve risk stratification and allow for timely therapeutic interventions that can reduce the need for dialysis.

Additionally, the ESC has updated its guidelines for heart failure, highlighting the importance of prevention and early treatment. These updates come as medical professionals anticipate an increase in heart failure cases due to aging populations and rising obesity rates.
