European Space Agency advances cargo and human spaceflight autonomy

The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a contract with The Exploration Company (TEC) to advance European commercial cargo transport capabilities to and from low Earth orbit. This project, part of the ALADDIN (Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node) program, aims to demonstrate the ability of the Nyx spacecraft to autonomously dock with the International Space Station (ISS).

The contract, valued at up to 760 million euros, includes 310 million euros for a demonstration mission and an additional 450 million euros reserved for two potential subsequent cargo missions. This initiative is a key step toward ensuring independent European access to space.

Separately, ESA is pursuing greater autonomy in human spaceflight. Director General Josef Aschbacher has proposed developing a full European system, including rockets, spacecraft, and life support, to reduce reliance on foreign operators. While purchasing flights from external providers could cost an estimated 5 billion euros over a decade, ESA’s proposed exploration program is estimated at approximately 1 billion euros annually. A political decision regarding the technology and timeline for this manned flight system is expected in Rome on December 15.
