European space autonomy and debris mitigation efforts

The European space sector is focusing on debris mitigation and increasing autonomous access to space. The European Space Agency (ESA) has scheduled the ClearSpace-1 mission for 2029, which aims to demonstrate the removal of non-cooperative space debris from Earth’s orbit; the mission was recently redesigned to target PROBA-1.

In parallel, efforts to develop reusable transport technologies have progressed through The Exploration Company’s development of the Nyx capsule. ESA has signed a contract worth up to 760 million euros with The Exploration Company as part of the ALADDIN program to demonstrate autonomous docking with the International Space Station (ISS). This initiative includes funding for a demonstration mission and potential subsequent cargo missions.

To further reduce reliance on foreign operators, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher has proposed the development of a comprehensive European system for human spaceflight, encompassing rockets, spacecraft, and life support. A political decision regarding the timeline and technology for this manned flight system is anticipated in Rome on December 15.
