European Space Agency warns of rising space debris risks
The European Space Agency (ESA) has issued a report warning of a growing risk of ground-level accidents caused by fragments of space objects that survive re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. This trend is driven by the cumulative effect of increased satellite launches and subsequent re-entries.
The agency notes that even if no new satellites were launched, the amount of space debris would continue to rise. This is because fragmentation events generate new debris faster than natural atmospheric re-entry can remove it. The report highlights a long-term threat known as a self-sustaining cycle of collisions, where debris fragments trigger further collisions, potentially rendering certain orbital regions unusable.
To mitigate these risks, the ESA recommends increasing the number of controlled re-entries and adopting technologies designed to ensure satellites are destroyed more effectively during atmospheric re-entry.
