To mitigate this, the agency recommends increasing controlled re-entries and adopting technologies to ensure satellites are destroyed more effectively during atmospheric re-entry.

Technological mitigation strategies continue to evolve. Robotic missions are being designed to demonstrate orbital sustainability by managing the end-of-life phase for satellites in both Low-Earth Orbit and geostationary graveyard orbits. Additionally, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is researching the use of laser technology to push debris out of its current trajectory using photons to protect the satellite industry.

NASA estimates approximately 25,000 tracked objects in orbit, alongside over 100 million smaller fragments. Legal experts, such as Professor Frans von der Dunk, have observed that existing space debris agreements are not equipped to manage current levels. Meanwhile, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working on new regulations to expedite commercial spacecraft launches, which may include environmental policy exemptions.
