European Summer Travel Spike Triggers Higher Budgets and Road Congestion
A Deloitte summer survey finds that seven out of ten Austrians intend to travel this summer despite rising living costs. The average travel budget is about €1,300 per person, roughly €200 less than the previous year, and one‑third of respondents plan multiple trips. Travelers are cutting expenses, seeking discounts, opting for cheaper destinations, and 37 % plan to stay in Austria while more than three‑quarters choose locations within Europe. About 40 % have taken out travel or cancellation insurance for the season.
The ADAC traffic forecast for 19‑21 June predicts heavy congestion on German highways as many families embark on short trips and attend major events such as the DTM race at the Lausitzring and the Hurricane Festival. Around 1,000 construction sites add to the slowdown. Similar pressure is expected on key routes in Austria, Switzerland and Italy, especially Alpine corridors. Drivers are urged to establish a rescue lane early to allow emergency services passage.
