European TreeTag Campaign reaches Croatian cities Kutina and Opatija

The cities of Kutina and Opatija have joined the European TreeTag Campaign 2026, an initiative across 12 European countries designed to raise awareness about the ecological value of urban trees.

In Kutina, TreeTag labels were placed on two trees: a marsh oak and a wild chestnut. In Opatija, eight selected trees, including various oaks, cedars, and magnolias, received the tags. These labels provide specific data for citizens, including species, trunk diameter, height, and leaf area.

The tags also calculate ecosystem services, such as how much oxygen a tree produces, how much carbon it stores, and its capacity for stormwater retention. By quantifying these benefits, the campaign aims to demonstrate that urban trees are vital for cooling cities, mitigating heat islands, purifying air, and improving overall quality of life.
