European TreeTag urban forestry campaign
Overview
The European TreeTag campaign has launched across multiple countries to highlight the ecological value and essential services provided by urban trees. The initiative uses specialized tags to inform citizens about specific benefits such as carbon sequestration, oxygen production, and rainwater management.
Initial efforts included activities in Denmark and the Netherlands. In Hvidovre, Denmark, officials used the campaign to demonstrate how trees mitigate flood risks and improve air quality. In Baarn, Netherlands, tagging was used to reveal specific impacts, such as a plane tree’s ability to collect over 64,000 liters of water.
The campaign has since expanded to include Croatian cities, such as Kutina and Opatija. In these locations, labels were placed on various species, including marsh oaks, wild chestnuts, cedars, and magnolias. These tags provide data on species, trunk diameter, height, and leaf area, while quantifying ecosystem services to demonstrate how urban trees mitigate heat islands and purify air.
