Amazon and Daimler Truck advance European heavy-duty vehicle decarbonization

Amazon is expanding its European decarbonization efforts by deploying Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric trucks. Following an agreement for over 200 vehicles, Amazon will have more than 50 units operating in Germany by the end of 2026, with the majority of the fleet destined for the United Kingdom. These heavy-duty battery-electric trucks are designed for long-haul and middle-mile routes, offering a range of up to 500 kilometers.

Daimler Truck is pursuing a dual-technology strategy to decarbonize European transport. In addition to battery-electric vehicles, the company plans to invest several hundred million euros by the end of the decade into hydrogen-powered trucks. CEO Karin Rådström noted that hydrogen serves specific use cases requiring higher payloads and faster refueling times.

A 2026 Bain & Company survey of over 500 European fleet decision-makers indicates that while 60% of operators expect fleet growth, customer satisfaction with manufacturers is declining. The survey highlights shifting brand loyalty, with one-third of operators open to changing manufacturers and a growing interest in Chinese truck brands among those considering electric options.
