European Union advances €90 billion Ukraine loan and drone aid

The European Union is implementing a €90 billion interest-free loan scheme to support Ukraine in 2026 and 2027. However, German MEP Fabio De Masi has raised concerns regarding the lack of clarity on how the financial burden will be distributed among EU member states. According to De Masi, the European Commission has been unable to provide a specific breakdown of the financial guarantees required from individual members.

Simultaneously, the nature of European military aid to Ukraine is shifting toward drone technology. Following changes in U.S. military aid, European support has increased, with drone-related assistance rising from under €400 million in 2022 to more than €1.5 billion in the first four months of 2026. This surge reflects a strategic pivot toward unmanned systems for reconnaissance and strikes, fostering a growing domestic drone ecosystem in Ukraine supported by Western funding and expertise.
