European Union agricultural policy sees strong public support amid reform talks
Recent Eurobarometer data indicates strong public support for the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Approximately 48% of Europeans believe the EU should increase financial support for farmers over the next decade, while one-third suggest maintaining current levels. Additionally, 95% of respondents view agriculture and rural areas as essential to Europe's future.
The survey highlights a growing preference for local products, with nearly 80% of respondents stating that European origin is a significant factor in their food purchasing decisions. In response, the European Commission plans to launch the ‘Buy european food’ campaign, a commitment previously made by Ursula von der Leyen.
Parallel to this public sentiment, negotiations are accelerating regarding the CAP reform scheduled for 2028. The upcoming framework aims to prioritize food sovereignty, competitiveness, and environmental transition. Key objectives for the post-2027 period include simplifying administrative processes, supporting generational renewal in farming, and addressing the economic realities of livestock farming amidst market volatility and climate challenges.
