Nepal floods: EU and China provide emergency aid as death toll rises
Devastating flash floods in Nepal, triggered by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, have resulted in at least 903 deaths and left approximately 4,250 people missing. The disaster, affecting the Bhotekoshi River region, has destroyed homes, roads, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure.
International relief efforts are underway. The European Union has pledged 2 million euros in emergency humanitarian aid to provide food, water, medical care, and shelter. To support these efforts, the EU has activated the Copernicus satellite service for damage mapping and is deploying a rapid response coordinator for Asia.
China has provided approximately 2 million USD in cash assistance, alongside 200,000 USD from the Red Cross Society of China. Chinese military transport aircraft have delivered 50 tonnes of emergency supplies, including tents and medical kits, to Kathmandu. Additionally, China has shared satellite and hydrological data with Nepal and dispatched tunnel rescue experts to assist in recovery operations.
