Nepal floods: EU allocates €2 million in emergency humanitarian aid

The European Union has allocated 2 million euros in emergency humanitarian aid to support communities in Nepal following devastating flash floods. The funding aims to provide life-saving assistance, including food, healthcare, clean water, and sanitation services.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with the affected population, stating, “Europe is with Nepal.” The EU is also deploying its rapid response coordinator for Asia to help manage the situation. This emergency funding follows nearly 3 million euros in aid previously allocated earlier this year for disaster preparedness in the region.

The floods, triggered by a glacier-induced ice and debris avalanche, have caused significant casualties and infrastructure damage. Reports indicate the death toll has risen to 469, with over 1,400 people still missing. Among the missing are at least 540 foreigners, including three Hungarian citizens.

In the United States, Bishop A. Elias Zaidan of the USCCB has called on the international community to mobilize more humanitarian aid for vulnerable families. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is currently monitoring the situation and working alongside local organizations such as Caritas Nepal to coordinate relief efforts.
