European Union adopts new air passenger rights regulation

The European Union has adopted Regulation 2026/2202, a major overhaul of air passenger rights designed to increase transparency and consumer protection. The new rules are set to formally apply starting October 23, 2027.

Key changes include mandatory rights for passengers to carry one free personal item (maximum 40 x 30 x 15 cm) that must fit under the seat. Additionally, airlines must display ticket prices that include a piece of hand luggage by default before the booking process begins, allowing for easier price comparisons.

Regarding flight disruptions, passengers arriving more than three hours late are entitled to compensation ranging from €250 to €600, depending on the flight distance. If a departure is delayed by five hours or more, passengers have the right to request a full refund. Such refunds must be processed automatically within seven calendar days. The regulation also addresses issues such as missed connections, hotel accommodation, and name correction procedures on tickets.
