European Union approves €115 million AGILE defense innovation program

The European Union has officially approved the AGILE defense innovation program, a €115 million initiative designed to accelerate the development and deployment of cutting-edge military technologies. The program specifically targets small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups, providing them with rapid and flexible funding to bridge the gap between prototype development and battlefield application.

Key features of the AGILE program include an unprecedented grant allocation timeline of approximately four months and a goal to move technologies from development to military use within one to three years. The funding can cover up to 100 percent of eligible costs for between 20 and 30 selected projects. The initiative focuses on disruptive areas such as artificial intelligence, drones, autonomous systems, robotics, and quantum computing, including the adaptation of dual-use civilian technologies for military purposes.

The program is expected to be fully operational by early 2027. Its adoption follows lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, highlighting the necessity for Europe to develop and deploy cost-efficient solutions with increased speed and scale.
