European Union approves €3.47 billion military aid package for Ukraine

The European Union announced a €3.47 billion financing package for Ukraine that will fund the purchase of drones, air‑defence systems, missiles and the possible integration of Gripen E fighter jets. The funding is part of a broader programme aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities while linking its production to the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB). Officials said the move signals a shift from short‑term assistance to a long‑term industrial strategy, reducing Europe’s reliance on U.S. military supplies as the conflict enters a prolonged phase.

The package builds on earlier EU support that focused on financial transfers, training and the provision of existing national stockpiles. By investing directly in defence equipment and industrial capacity, the EU seeks to create a sustainable supply chain for ammunition, drones, sensors and other systems needed for a high‑intensity war.
