European Union approves five major joint defense projects

The European Union has formally approved its first five megaprojects under the European Defense Projects of Common Interest (EDPCI) framework. These initiatives, part of the €1.5 billion European Defense Industry Program (EDIP), aim to develop complex military capabilities through joint manufacturing and deployment. Ukraine is set to participate in four of the five projects.

The approved projects include:

• DECODER: Development of military drones and counter-drone systems. • IMSD: Maritime and seabed defense systems. • SPACE: Expansion of military space capabilities, including satellite communications and early warning systems. • EU-FIAMD: Integrated air and missile defense systems. • EFW: Strengthening defenses along the Eastern Flank.

The European Commission has earmarked €325 million to support these initiatives, making them eligible for immediate funding. In Romania, political discussions have emerged regarding how the nation can transition from a mere purchaser of equipment to an active participant in European production chains, emphasizing the need for technology transfers and local industrial capacity.
