European Union bans eight common smoke flavorings

The European Food Safety Authority has banned eight commonly used smoke flavorings in various food products due to concerns that they may cause genetic damage. The ban, which took effect on July 1, affects products such as BBQ sauces, chips, snacks, ready-to-eat meals, soups, spice mixes, and plant-based meat alternatives.

While these laboratory-produced flavors were used to provide a cost-effective smoky taste to foods that were not traditionally smoked, they are now restricted. However, a transition period remains in place for meat, fish, and cheese products until 2029. Consumers are advised to check ingredient lists for smoke flavorings, though the label alone may not specify if the flavoring is one of the prohibited types.
