European Union calls for global action against poverty and hunger
The European Union has called for intensified international efforts to eradicate poverty and uphold the right to food. During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the EU emphasized that conflicts, climate change, and economic instability are placing global food security under severe strain.
Addressing the UN Third Committee, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Union highlighted the importance of inclusive urban planning, safe housing, and access to essential services to prevent social exclusion caused by rapid urbanization. While welcoming UN initiatives for human-centric smart cities, the EU warned that digitalization and modernization could deepen existing inequalities if the needs of vulnerable communities are not addressed.
To combat these issues, the EU aims to reduce the number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion by at least 15 million by 2030. The Union continues to support member states in strengthening human rights-based social protection systems and expanding local social inclusion.
