Global food security and poverty initiatives

Overview

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the European Union called for intensified international efforts to eradicate poverty and uphold the right to food. The EU highlighted that conflicts, climate change, and economic instability are straining global food security, and reaffirmed its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Following these calls, a group of leaders including representatives from the United States, the European Union, the African Union, Colombia, Nigeria, and Indonesia issued a joint declaration to address rising food insecurity. The group pledged to increase financial aid to humanitarian organizations and committed to avoiding restrictions on food and fertilizer markets.

Participants noted that the crisis is being exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and fertilizer shortages. In response to famine threats, France announced it will fund the evacuation of Ukrainian wheat to Somalia, while the United States is expected to announce new aid.
