European Union calls for transparency in Guatemala Comptroller selection

The European Union has called for transparency and independence in the selection process for Guatemala’s new Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC). The diplomatic body urged the Nomination Commission to ensure that the chosen official possesses the necessary integrity, capacity, and independence, noting the role's significance for the 2027 electoral process.

Observers, including the Alianza por las Reformas and the Movimiento Cívico Nacional (MCN), emphasize that candidates must be free from political party affiliations to ensure technical and objective performance. The 27-member Nomination Commission is tasked with vetting candidates and submitting a list of six aspirants to Congress.

Constitutional requirements for the role include being a Guatemalan citizen over 40 years old, a certified Public Accountant and Auditor, and having at least 10 years of professional experience. The commission is expected to define the candidate profile and issue a formal call for applications following upcoming sessions.
