Guatemala Comptroller General selection process

The selection process for Guatemala’s new Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) for the 2026-2030 term has faced increasing pressure and scrutiny. Internal debates have centered on evaluation rubrics and specific requirements, such as registration with the Special Verification Intendancy (IVE). Although only three applications had been submitted in late August, the commission is now tasked with evaluating 40 applicants to establish a final list of six candidates for submission to Congress.

In September, Cortés reported instances of intimidation, defamation, and pressure aimed at influencing the selection. He urged commission members to remain focused and avoid being “contaminated” by external opinions or provocative messages from sectors attempting to interfere with the process and pressure the commission into selecting specific candidates.
