Guatemala Comptroller General selection process
Overview
The selection process for Guatemala’s new Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) has drawn international and domestic scrutiny regarding transparency and independence. The European Union has urged the 27-member Nomination Commission to ensure the chosen official possesses the necessary integrity and capacity, particularly given the role’s importance for the 2027 electoral process.
As the commission works to select six candidates for the 2026-2030 term, Miquel Cortés, president of the commission, described the current nomination model as “exhausted” and called for future reforms. While the commission is currently bound by existing law, internal debates have emerged regarding evaluation rubrics and specific requirements, such as registration with the Special Verification Intendancy (IVE). As of late August, only three applications had been submitted for the position.
